5 blogs that define my urban life

Four dice that spell BLOG

I love my Apple Macbook Pro for a number of reasons. Its portability is one reason, and it looks smart. But I also love it because it’s a sleek writing and reading machine. If you are a follower of this blog then you already now that I like to read, write and discover things of interest on the Internet. This is what always brings me great joy.

My interest in Blogs grew slowly but deeply. Their inclusion into my reading list was an organic one. I love that there is so much information available on the Internet. I also love that there is a Blog on any topic. No matter how strange or unusual. However, this also means that there are a lot of Blogs out there. How does one choose?

Since starting Mia Bella Vita nearly two years, I have steadily become more interested in reading a variety of other Blogs. They are quick to read. Informative and furthermore, I am in and out with just enough time to drink my cup of tea. I really do get quite excited when I find a Blog that I find fascinating, interesting and entertaining to read.

The following Blogs are my favourite five. For me, they are allies in supporting and informing my values. They promote the issues I believe in. They provide me with great information. There are filled with tips and hints. Above all they are entertaining. There is nothing better than making a cup of tea (coffee if it’s before 1pm), grabbing my Mac, finding a cosy spot and catching up with one of my favourite blogs.

I invite you to grab a cup of tea or coffee. Settle into a comfy chair and check out my favourite blogs listed below?

Apartment Therapy

Pink and Mint Floral Retro Kitchen

I came across Apartment Therapy last year in October. I was researching Art Deco Apartments in Australia for a novel I am currently writing. I was instantly drawn to the visuals. One of the pitfalls, when you are writing a novel is the research when checking facts. It can be an unending rabbit warren of links after links. That’s how I stumble across Apartment Therapy.

Although the products are geared to an American audience they do seem to have a strong presence of all things Ikea. However, one of the best things about the Internet is that you can shop online. This gives you access to some of the products that are featured. For us Southern Hemisphere dwellers that pretty nifty.

It’s our mission to show how people are making their own homes more beautiful with unstaged and true-to-life tips and photos for range of budgets.

Apartment Therapy has Posts on favourite rooms, beautiful interiors, before and after stories, unique real estate for sale and stories on style. Anything to do about fabulous homes and the rooms within them. What I love about it is the focus on apartments and how to use space effectively.

My husband and I moved from Sydney selling our renovated 1901 Federation Cottage to move to Brisbane. We ended up buying a Woolstore that had been converted into apartments. The suburb we live in has at least eight of these wonderfully iconic and majestic Woolstores. All of them have been converted into distinctly unique apartments. This Blog is the perfect go-to in apartment styling and lifestyle.

And for the record, we just love apartment living.

Minimalist Baker

Two muffins in blue dotty cupcake patties and blueberries

One of the teachers at work, who is also a Vegan, brought in some Vegan Brownies. They were amazing and no one could stop at one. We gushed and gushed over the brownies. With each new first bite came the echo of, “Can I have the recipe? Are they hard to make?”. Not only did she share the recipe she told us all about this Blog. As soon as I got home I googled it and I have been a follower ever since. The website posts a variety of recipes a few times a week. The creator, Dana has created recipes that are simply fast and most importantly delicious.

We share plant-based recipes requiring 10 ingredients or less, 1 bowl, or 30 minutes or less to prepare.

I love this concept it’s … well … efficient and easy. I have made a number of her dishes from the Minimalist Baker and they are always a hit. Their declaration is authentic. You only need no more than 10 ingredients. Meals are ready in 30 minutes or under and washing up is a breeze with one bowl cooking. This Blog is perfect and fits nicely with my urban life that can be a whirlwind of deadlines, chores and events. The only thing that would be perfect is someone willing to cook … cue husband! The world is complete and just perfect.

Surviving in Italy

Retro Mint Vespa Scooter in an Italian street

This is the funniest Blog around on living in Italy. It is raw, funny, honest and real. I came across this Blog again as I meandered and wandered around Internet land while researching. The posts are absolutely hilarious. I am continually banging on about how funny they are … but they are. Truly are.

I am from an Italian family and, although I do not live in Italy, my life in Australia in an Italian family builds strong parallels to the attitudes and culture that resonate from the Posts. And as M. Elizabeth shares, not these are not always positive. For me personally, the posts culturally resonate with me.

I moved to Italy for grad school and fell in love with an Italian man and his majestic chest hair. I also fell a lot, literally, because of cobblestones.

The blog has a section that focuses on personal experience. Yep, you’ve got it … in a humorous way. There is a section on style and travel and all things “Italy”. And of course, there’s a page on Italian food and wine. I mean, how could you not include this page. So grab yourself a vino and pasta ai fungi, put on some Andrea Bocelli tunes and settle in and have a giggle. Ciao!
